Please pray for this family and their child. Here is an update on Leland “Pickle” Erickson: As of Tuesday November 4th, 2008 Leland’s results came in from the cytogenetic test. Unfortunately, the results showed that Leland had a rare disease not often found in children called Myelodysplastic Syndrome, or MDS. The Doctors explained that they were unprepared for this diagnosis, as they were certain it would not be MDS, as MDS is usually seen in people 60+ years. Myelodysplastic Syndrome is a term used to describe a a group of cancers of the blood and bone marrow. MDS is commonly referred to as “pre~leukemia”. In Lelands case, the Doctors believe Leland is developing Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, or AML. Leland will have another Bone Marrow Biopsy, to search for “blasts” (cancerous cells). Since Leland has MDS, treatment is a must. Without treatment, MDS is fatal. Our family was just tested to see if one of us was a match to donate our Bone Marrow. The results take about 3 weeks to come in. We hope and pray that one of us will match perfectly! The treatment for MDS and AML are chemotherapy and then a Bone Marrow Transplant. The Doctors hope to begin chemotherapy as soon as possible. -- shelly powell

Hello. My son has recently been diagnosed with MDS also although they have not pin pointed the subtype as of yet. Since he has no symptoms we are going with the course of "watch and wait" as it stands now. Going back to CHOA tomorrow for another visit. We are located in GA and if you would like to network with someone else dealing with this you can email me. We will certainly pray for your childs recovery.
Blessings....
