1 Timothy 1:2 (NIV):
"To Timothy my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord."
Paul addresses Timothy as his son in the faith. Today, we might say that Paul was Timothy's mentor. But the relationship was much more than that. He calls him son. You can feel the tenderness in the word and the commitment as well--the commitment of a father to his son. The word just goes so deep.
And he emphasizes son and even deepens the meaning further when he calls him his true son in the faith. It really shows how much Paul believes in Timothy.
If I received this letter myself, I could live off verse 2 alone for a month! I would be flying high on that statement of affirmation!
Lord, thank You for being a Father to me. Thank You for the people in my life that have made such a difference in me. Really, very few could I call fathers in the faith. Help me to be a spiritual father to someone who needs it. How can I pour into someone who might become my son in the faith? And, more importantly, how can I pour into my own flesh-and-blood daughter to help her grow in the faith?
