"Deacons, likewise, are to be...sincere..."
Servant leadership quality #2: The deacon/leader must be sincere.
The word "sincere" literally means "not double-tongued." The leader must be honest and not hypocritical.
The leader can't say one thing and then do another. The leader can't pretend to be someone he's not. Authenticity is key.
We have to be so careful in our pursuit of excellence in the church. If taken too far the church can ring untrue, slick, and not authentic. We need to make sure we aren't covering up the rough spots just to make us look better than we really are.
Yes, we need to improve and become better leaders, but we also need to recognize who we are and that we have limitations. (Marcus Buckingham's strengths-based materials can help with this.) And we don't need to try and be something we're not.
Raise your leadership level: Are you sincere? As Linus says of the pumpkin patch, are you "sincerity as far as the eye can see"?
Is it time to 'fess up to those you lead that you aren't all that you've led them to believe? Authenticity and vulnerability will carry you a long way with your followers. But make sure it's not just part of a PR campaign to better your image or you've lost the point!
